Requirements and regular in-class activities:

1. Please finish reading the required novel and/or critical essays before coming to class.

2. Choose one of the 7 novels on the syllabus. Finish reading it as early as possible. Identify one aspect of the novel that interests you most. Find a critical essay about your chosen topic and finish reading it. Make a presentation (about 5~10 minutes) on the chosen topic and essay.

請同學在進度表中的7本小說中選一本，並盡快讀完該小說。讀完之後，請想想看小說中哪一個部分最讓您印象深刻，會因此希望繼續探索，然後請針對您有興趣的部分，做一些研究。找出一篇與您選的題目有關的學術論文，完成閱讀後該文章後，請做一次約5~10分鐘的口頭報告，將您有興趣的研究方向，以及您所選論文的內容，分享給班上同學。(一本小說至多2位同學負責報告，謝謝。)

3. Starting from week 8, our class will regularly begin with student presentations. Discussion and passage analysis will follow. Please participate in in-class discussion vigorously.

4. Start thinking about your term paper as soon as possible. Discuss your term paper with the instructor if necessary.

5. At the end of the term, students are required to present their research ideas to the entire class and to produce a research paper in the MLA style.

Grading policies:

Presentation and weekly contributions 20%

Mini-conference presentation 10%

Final term paper 70%
