The class readings include various fields in which students can converse in English by delving into areas of personal interest and popular topics. The instructive methods include comprehension checking of the listening passages, cloze tests of the listening passages, team listening projects done progressively and monitored regularly to be followed by oral activities, interviews, role plays, storytelling, pair and small group discussions, presentations (individual and/or group), impromptu speech, and debate.
1. Each student will deliver a one-minute speech on the topic related to the class content that day. Conference with the teacher before the presentation is required.
2. A group of two students will do the weekly ppt oral presentation for 8 minutes on the assigned chapter with a printed copy of the ppt file for the instructor.
3. There are 2 projects required for this class. The first project before the mid-term exam, “CLC Buddy Project,” is an individual 2-minute report on a foreign student study companion of Chinese Language Center.
4. The second project before the final exam is a group project, “Ideal Job Podcast” (5-minute long), which might include a podcast based an interview of professionals (might be in Chinese) whose jobs students are interested in, and students’ afterthoughts on the ideal job and the interview (1 minute) in English.
