Requirement/Grading

Everything is subject to change, so please refer to all the announcements in class.

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:

  • Attendance: 10%

  • Participation: 10%

  • Oral presentations:

    • Illustration book story telling: 10%

    • Group presentation: 15%

    • NCCU NEWS Report: 10%

    • In-class activities: 15%

Several activities will be held from time to time. Each student is required to participate when the roles are assigned. If you are absent or taking a leave, the mark will be affected.

  • Midterm – Movie critics: 15%

  • Final – Podcast: 15%

Attendance & Participation

Your participation grade will be based on the average minutes you are present in class, and the mark will be calculated with 100-point scale, whereas participation grade will be based on homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions. You will need to submit proper document in order for the instructor to mark your absence as a granted leave. If the final mark for the attendance is lower than 80, this attendance mark will be zero.

Leaves

Any leaves should be filed via the online system and have to be done before class time. Any leave applications filed after class time will be dismissed.

Oral presentations

You will give three types of oral presentations during the semester.

  • Group presentation (15-20 minutes/15%): In this presentation, you will pick a social issue that we as people in Taiwan should pay attention to and deliver your presentation. Every one in your group should take part in the presentation delivery. The presentation itself should include the following:

    • Information delivery

    • Your points of view

    • The questions/problems hidden behind the issue(s) you have picked

    • Interactions between you (presenters) and your audiences (fellow classmates), as well as their participation counts (not games)

    • Conclusion

  • Illustration book voice over (5-8 minutes/10%): You will fully utilize AI tool to create your own illustration book with the story created by you and your peers as a group. If anyone is doing the dubbing work for more than one characters, you have alter your second voice a bit to make them sound different.

    • 3-5 people in a group, depending on how many characters in the story book

    • The speaking pace for everyone should be consistent, as it’s the same story.

    • Pronunciation does matter in this homework assignment, so please do take time working on your accent. At least the pronunciation shouldn’t be wrong.

  • NCCU NEWS Report (All together 30 minutes/10%):

    • It’s a group task.

    • Each group should choose your own topic and direction.

    • Some may be recorded earlier, whereas some can report it on the designated day

Midterm Exam

  • Book/Movie/TV series critic video:

    • 3-5 people in a group

    • Choose one book, movie, or TV series as your topic

    • It is a video task.

    • Work with your teammates and choose what approach or method you will use to showcase your reviews about the book/movie/TV series of your choice

    • Everyone in the team should be in the video, as well as speaking in the video.

    • Try to make it one with more conversation dialogues, instead of question-answer responses that would sound more like an interview.

    • Your video should include the following:

      • Why did you choose it?

      • What did you get from it?

      • What’s left to the viewers/readers?

      • Any interesting English vocabulary/phrases/idioms that you have learned from it?

    • Your videos will be uploaded to YouTube, and the first few ones that get the most “likes” will get bonus points for this mark. Remember it’s not semester grade.

      • The most likes: 5 points

      • The second likes: 4 points

      • The third most likes: 3 points

      • The second most likes: 2 points

Final exam: Podcase

  • 4-5 people in a group

  • Duration: 10-15 minutes, including the conclusion you use to wrap up the show.

  • Each student has to contribute in their podcast evenly.

  • The performance will be recorded for your own training purpose.
