Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:
- Participation: (15%)
Including attendance, class discussion, effort on speaking in class, and homework/quizzes - Moodle: (5%)

- Midterm – written test: 10%
- Final – oral: 10%
- Final – written test: 15%
Participation
Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.
Leaves
Any leaves should be filed via the online system and have to be done before class time. Any leave applications filed after class time will be dismissed.
In-class exercises/quizzes
Periodically throughout the semester, writing/listening exercises and pop quizzes will be given in class. These exercises and quizzes CANNOT be made up even if it’s a granted leave.
Oral presentation
You will give a group presentation during the semester. The grading rubric for the speaking task will be shown in class and distributed via email.
Story Telling with AI Tools (5-7 minutes): 3-4 people in a group. Create your own story with AI tools and make it a video.
Group presentation (10-12 minutes): You and three other students will give a presentation based on the topic of your own choice. The presentation should be approximately 10-12 minutes. Students will be scored individually based on their ability and preparation; however, part of the presentation marks will be the same for each one in the group. More details will be provided in class.
Written assignments
There are three written assignments based on the learning materials and the textbook for the course. The grading rubric for the written assignments is available on the class website.
- Writing 1 – Reflection: Reflection on your winter vacation.
- Writing 2 – Statement of Purpose: Pretend you are a senior student applying for graduate school in the States.
- Writing 3 – Critical Thinking: You will be given a case scenario in school and write your own response. The formal email format is going to be introduced in the first week. Handouts will be available on Moodle.
Examinations
No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.
Midterm and final written exams: All materials, including the readings, handouts, and information provided in class will potentially be included on mid-term and final exams. The written tests include vocabulary/grammar questions, a listening/reading section, and short writing tasks.
Final oral exam: Three topics will be announced a week ahead and form your own group, a group of 2. The speaking test requires you and your partners to conduct a 2-minute conversation based on the topic drawn out right before the oral exam. Notes are not allowed. Students will be scored individually based on the following, but not limited to: ability to react to the partner’s questions and to speak for an extended period of time without hesitation, deviation or repetition. More details will be announced in class. |
