Requirement/Grading

Attendance of the course and active participation in class is mandatory. A weekly essay-question – linked closely to the preparatory readings – is meant to steer discussion in class. Written answers (of approx. 200 words) to this specific question need to be handed in at the latest on Tuesday morning before noon.

Absence (for good reasons) has to be notified before class. Missed classes will have to be made up with an extra assignment.

Assessment of the course consists of the following elements:

  • Attendance and participation: 15 % of the overall mark

  • Weekly assignments, including short essays: 15 %

  • Mid-term ‘country briefings’ (to be carried out twice) in group: 30%

  • Final presentation in pairs: 40%

Textbook & Reference

Selected readings will be provided by the lecturer of the following book:

  • A History of Southeast Asia: Critical Crossroads by Anthony Reid, Wiley-Blackwell 2015, maximum of ten pages weekly.

  • Additional (reference) material.
