Requirement/Grading

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:




  • Participation (including attendance, effort on speaking in class, and homework): 15%

  • In-class exercises/quizzes: 25%

  • Oral presentations: 15%

  • Written assignments: 30%

  • Final oral exams: 15%



Participation



Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor's questions, and reactions to other students' contributions.



In-class exercises/quizzes



Periodically throughout the semester, two vocabulary quizzes will be given in class. These exercises and quizzes can NOT be made up.



Oral presentations



You will give an individual oral report and a group presentation during the semester.



For the individual report, you will share a film with PPT slides in small groups for approximately 5 minutes.



For the group presentation, you will present in groups of 5 for 10 minutes on a product/service you have cteated. You have to try to sell it to the class. A 5-minute Q&A will follow each presentation. More details will be provided in class.



The grading rubric for the oral presentations will be available on the class website.



Written assignments



There will be five written assignments based on the learning materials for the course.



The first assignment asks students to introduce themselves and share culture-related experiences.



The second assignment asks students to work in groups of 5s to describe numbers adn statistics ont he assigned materials.



The third assignment is individual work. Students will be asked to write an email about a problem in school.



The fourth assignment asks students to work in groups to produce a written story with 5 illustrations/pictures.



The last assignment is a book report on the novel.



More details will be given in class. The grading rubrics for the written assignments will be aviailable on the class website.



Examinations



A final oral exam will be conducted in class. Students come in pairs at the scheduled time to discuss in front of the teacher. Five questions will be announced at Week 15. One question will be drawn out after studnets come in. Notes are allowed, but not reading aloud from the notes. The pair discussion should last about 10 minutes. Students will be scored individually based on the criteria announced prior to the exam (e.g. engagement, content, reparedness, etc.). No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor's permission in advance.
