Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions, pair/group work, and presentations. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:

Grading Basis:

1. Speaking Skill Training (40%): enhance students’ abilities in social conversations, effective presentation skills (e.g., story-telling, body language, visual aids, etc.), cross-cultural understanding and communication, discussion leading, reflective discussion skills, & teamwork

50. (S) Tea-Time (TT) Story Presentation (10%)


50. (FB) assignments: Self-analysis (Partner Intro., LT leading, TT, English Night), & Reflection (English Night, Samba, etc.) (10%)

Speaking Skill Training:

You will prepare leading the discussion of an issue relating to the lecture topic of the week with your teammates, give a group presentation, analyze your presentations, and do an individual presentation during the semester. For the lecture topic leading, you and your teammates will watch the videos offered by the instructor in advance, prepare handouts and power point, and practice leading the discussion in class. You are encouraged to research the topic and cite your sources on your power point and/or the handouts you will offer to the class. For the group presentation, you and your teammates will tell vivid and significant stories of yourselves. The presentation should be approximately 12~15 minutes, followed by a 5-minute discussion. Each group should meet with the instructor two weeks prior to their presentation to discuss their topic and outline. Following the presentation, they will watch their presentation video, and submit a group reflective written analysis on FB. Finally, for the individual presentation at the end of this semester, you will videotape yourself and give a 3-minute presentation about your learning progress in this class by incorporating all the presentation skills learned this semester.

2. Lecture-Listening & Note-Taking Training (30%): improve students’ note-taking/summarizing skills through the exercises of listening to the variety of academic lectures, as well as presenting summaries

Lecture-Listening & Note-Taking Training:

You will be doing weekly note-taking exercises by practicing Cornell note-taking skills while watching lecture videos. In addition, you will be expected to share your summary and participate in the discussions regarding the lecture videos.

3. Midterm & Final (30%): enhance students’ abilities in cross-cultural communication, project/event planning, organization, execution, teamwork, and presenting/performing in English

Midterm & Final:

Your midterm will be closely related to two special activities, English Tour and Encounter International Students (EIS). Your midterm grade will be based on your thorough research prior to the events, active participation in the activities, and reflective presentations followed by the experiences. Your final will be well prepared and publically presented at our English Night. Your final grade will include the proposal or presentation outline of what you plan to present, your in-class rehearsals, and your final presentation. The grading rubric for the presentations will be provided in class. More details about these projects will be discussed in class.
