Requirement/Grading

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Grades are determined by the following course components:

  • Participation (including attendance, effort on speaking in class, and homework): 15%

  • In-class exercises/quizzes: 15%

  • Oral presentations: 10%

  • Writing assignments: 10%

  • Midterm exam: 30%

  • Final oral exam: 20%

Participation

Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.

In-class exercises/quizzes

Periodically throughout the semester, writing/listening exercises and pop quizzes will be given in class. These exercises and quizzes can NOT be made up.

Oral presentations

During the semester, you will have two prepared oral presentations. First, is the poster presentation: you and two other students will create and present a poster related to course content. The presentation should be approximately 10 minutes, followed by a 5-minute discussion. Second, is the final presentation on cross-cultural communication units 1-3: You and three classmates will prepare and present a formal presentation to the class, but evaluation will be on an individual basis. More details will be provided in class.

Written assignments

In addition to the periodic in-class and take-home writing exercises, there will be three written assignments based on the textbook and online learning materials for the course. In each assignment, you will respond to the writing prompts provided by the teacher. Your papers should show you have completed and thought seriously and critically about the readings and videos provided for you. You are also encouraged to research the topic and cite your sources. A writing template and an assessment rubric for each assignment are available on the class website (Moodle).

Examinations

All materials, including the readings, handouts, and information provided in class will potentially be included on mid-term exam. The mid-term exam is a written test, and the final exam contains a speaking test. The written tests include vocabulary/grammar questions, a listening/reading section. The speaking test requires you to answer two or more questions, each question for two minutes. The instructor will evaluate your ability to respond to the questions appropriately and to speak for an extended period of time without hesitation, deviation or repetition. An assessment rubric for the speaking test is available on the class website. No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.

To do well in this class:

  • Come to class prepared every week on time.

  • Check your email and the Moodle platform regularly.

  • ASK QUESTIONS!

  • Participate actively in pair/group discussions

  • Take responsibility for your own learning: Preview the semester schedule and plan your time

  • Be a good classmate during group work

  • Communicate professionally with your instructor and course assistant

Tips:

  • Complete homework assignments and reading BEFORE arriving for class.

    • Late homework penalty: For each day past the deadline, the grade will be cut by 25%.

    • Late homework may not be given feedback and comments.

  • You are responsible for handing in assignments on time  (even if you are absent the week before)  and finding out about homework assignments on any day you are absent.

    • Ask a responsible classmate you trust or email me for information.

    • If someone gives you the wrong information, it cannot be redone.

Attendance and tardiness:  I will usually take attendance!:

The most important thing is that you SHOW UP ON TIME FOR CLASS!

  • Attendance points

    • 2 points: Present when role is taken.

    • 1 point: Late— you must tell me you have arrived at the break or you will be counted absent.

    • 0 points: Absent for one period (first or second) or two periods.

  • Excused absence (0 points, but no penalty):

    • Certain activities—representing NCCU in sports, music, or other event.

    • Illness: Bring receipt or documentation from doctor or hospital.

    • Family situation—please inform me in advance or as soon as possible.

  • Unexcused absence: No show, no communication, and no points: No make up

During class

  • Please respect your classmates and teacher during and after class.

  • Do not eat or sleep in class.

  • Do not spend time with social texting in class. Whatever it is can wait until break-time.

  • Do not interrupt class by answering your cell phone.

    • Note: I only answer my phone in class if my son is calling me.

Language policy:

I have hope that all students participate and work in English during class. However, there are times when you will need to use your first language to help you start assignments and to confirm your understanding. That is fine. Please just try your best to work In English in the class. The sooner you start working on your topics in English, the sooner you will gain confidence In your ability.

If you have a problem or concern you need to discuss with me, please do not hesitate to speak with me in Chinese. I can also read Chinese, so you may write email to me in Chinese, but including English will be helpful.

Plagiarism and cheating

If any student is found to have copied any part of an assignment from any other source, the student will get a "0" for that assignment and be asked to do it again. If a student is caught plagiarizing a second time, he/she Will fail the course. If any student is found to have cheated on a quiz or test, the same policy will stand.

Special needs

If any student has any special needs due to a physical or mental handicap, please let me know so that any arrangements can be made to facilitate your success in this class.
