Requirement/Grading

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:

Participation



Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.



In-class Vocabulary Quizzes



Periodically throughout the semester, five vocabulary quizzes will be given in class. These quizzes can NOT be made up.



Group Presentations



You will give two group presentations during this semester.



For the first group presentation, you will present in groups of 5 members for 20 minutes on issues and themes regarding culture and stereotypes. A 5-minute Q & A will follow each presentation. A group graph writing is due one week post presentation.



For the second group presentation, you will present in groups of 5 members for 10 minutes on your fairy tale analysis. The presentation should be approximately10 minutes.



More details will be provided in class.



 



Written Assignments



There will be three written assignments based on the learning materials for the course.



The first writing assignment asks students to work in groups of 5s to produce a written piece to describe and explain a graph related to culture and stereotypes. Members are expected to write three paragraphs for this assignment.



The second writing assignment requires students to build a creative story of their own. Students, in groups of 5 will conduct a two-page story.



The final individual writing assignment is designed to evaluate students’ ability to respond to emails. Students will be asked to write an email based on a certain scenario in school.



More details will be provided in class. A rubric for each writing assignment will be shown ahead of time.



 



Final Oral Exam



A final oral exam will be conducted in class. Students in groups of 3 will discuss on the topic of education & learning. Five questions will be announced ahead of time. One question will be drawn out right before the group oral exam. Notes are allowed. Students will be scored individually based on their ability to engage in a discussion and the content that is stated. A rubric for scoring will be announced prior to the exam

  • No textbook is required. A $100 photocopying fee will be collected at the beginning of the semester.
