Teaching Methods
Teaching Assistant
Requirement/Grading

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:

  • Participation (including attendance, effort on speaking in class, and homework): 20%

  • Oral presentations and written assignments: 30%

  • Midterm and final exams: 40%

  • Others – unit review quizzes: 10%

Participation

Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.

In-class exercises/quizzes

Every textbook unit will have a review quiz the following week to ensure the learning of the contents.

Oral presentations

You will give two individual oral reports and 4 group presentations during the semester. For the individual report, you will have a 2-minute monologue on issues from the textbook. For the group presentation, you and 6 other students will research on the topic of each unit. The presentation should be approximately 8 minutes, followed by a 2-minute Q and A. For each presentation, the group shall provide a written report. More details will be provided in class.

Written assignments

There will be four writing tasks of the textbook units and 2 about TED Talks. Three of the writings will be related with three assigned MOOC units. In each task, you shall be able to follow the instruction of the task. Your papers should show you have completed and thought seriously and critically about the readings and videos provided for you. The grading rubric for the written assignments is available on the class website.

Examinations

  • Unit Quizzes: There will be review quizzes after each unit completed. Each review quiz checks your knowledge of the key language areas taught in the unit and practice the reading and listening skills from the unit.

  • Midterm & Final Exam: All four skills, listening, reading, writing and speaking, will be assessed. The exams are in the form from general language testing systems containing all four skills of general language proficiency. The speaking test will be conducted in the form of a one-to-one interview and will be recorded. You will need to talk about the topic for 2 minutes, after which the teacher will ask questions relating to the theme. The grading rubric for the speaking test is available on the class website.

No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.
