Requirement/Grading

Course requirements

  1. Participation 10%

  2. Guide discussion in 1 class 20%

  3. Write & present an Activity Proposal Case Report 15% (PPT & Paper)

  4. Prepare and present a Briefing Paper 25% (PPT & Paper)

  5. Final paper 30%

  6. Extra Credit 10%

  1. Participation: students are required to attend, to read all assignments every class, and to discuss. You are also expected to find and follow two blogs.

  2. Guided Discussion: For each class, three students have the primary responsibility for guiding the discussion and interacting with the professor on the issues. However, all are expected to participate. Leaders will be graded on:

    1. Your prepared questions to engage the class

    2. Your understanding of the substance of the readings

    3. Your effectiveness in engaging the class in that substance

    4. Your inclusion of two blogs that are assigned and chosen

    5. A prepared written summary (1-3 pages) of your feedback and critic of the reading. This should be submitted individually by email to me and your classmates (by Sunday 11:00pm prior to your ‘guided discussion’).

  3. Activity Proposal Case Report: Imagine you are a diplomat. You choose a country and target country (with the professor). Then you propose a project/ activity/ event/ etc. which will be an effective application of PD. Write a Case Report (1-2 pages) for your boss and prepare a PPT (10 minutes) to present to your staff colleagues. This is a very narrow focus on something TO BE DONE NOW, a micro view. You are trying to convince your colleagues that this PD activity is a good idea and the embassy can afford to do it.

  4. Briefing Paper: Imagine you are a diplomat. You choose a country (with the professor). You are to brief the Foreign Minister of the country on the major PD challenges facing this country and to suggest a strategy to meet those challenges. Write a Briefing Paper (3-4 pages) describing the challenges and strategy. Prepare a PPT (15 minutes) to present to the Foreign Minister. This is a macro view.

  5. Final Paper: What theoretical approach (es), ethics, and strategies do you find most effective as PD tools of diplomacy? Explain and provide illustrations. If you practiced PD, how would you approach your work? (5-8 pages plus notes and bibliography) (due 6/4)

  6. Extra Credit: Attend and write a review (1-2 pages) of a Cultural Diplomacy event put on by one of the diplomatic missions to Taiwan. Provide review, photos, and flyers/etc.

  7. Ph.D. students are also expected to regularly

    1. Link the discussions and readings to other authors, major interpretations, or schools of thought

    2. Link the discussions to theoretical issues in their specialty

    3. Critically analyze both the readings and the focus of the discussion

  8. Final Grade: There is the possibility to receive of 110% of the grades. The best 100% will be used to calculate the final grade.
