Teaching Methods
Teaching Assistant

TA job description:

The job would include giving and grading quizzes and assignments, classroom assistance and monitoring, researching online information, maintaining class website, notifying students course information, reading materials and giving feedback, taking attendance and so on.

Requirement/Grading

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. You final grades are determined by the following course components:

Grading

Participation   20%

     Attendance       10%

     In-class speaking   5%

     Homework        5%

In-class exercises / quizzes  20%

Oral Presentation   15%   [Group Oral presentation during Week 12-13]

Writing Assignments  15% [Email writing, summary writing, opinion paragraph writing, 5% each]

CCC review exam     15%

Final exam           15%

Participation

Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation and the contribution you make to the learning experiences of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.

In-class exercises / quizzes

Periodically throughout the semester, writing exercises and quizzes will be given in class. These exercises and quizzes cannot be made up.

Oral presentation

You will give one group presentation (group of 5) in this semester. For this presentation, each group will be assigned a topic from all the topics related to the units in this semester, including the cross-curricular curriculum. The presentation should be approximately 15 minutes. Each group should discuss their topic and hand in their outline to the instructor two weeks prior to the presentation for preview. Peer-review and self-reflection will also be included in grading. More details will be provided in class.

Writing assignments

There are three writing assignments based on the online learning materials (email writing, summary writing, opinion paragraph writing). In each assignment, you will respond to the writing prompts regarding a cross-cultural issue. Your work should show you have completed and thought seriously and critically about the readings and videos provided for you. You are also encouraged to research the topic and cite your sources.

Cross-Cultural Curriculum review exam

This written exam includes 15 True/False questions and 2 open-ended questions from the six units from the CCC. Watch the videos as many times as necessary to be familiar with the content before the exam.

Final exam

This oral exam includes two parts. The first part is on pronunciation and the second part requires you to answer two questions from the textbook units 6, 7, & 9. The instructor will evaluate your ability to respond to the questions appropriately and to speak for an extended period of time without hesitation, deviation or repetition. No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.

Notes:

1. All assignments must be handed in in electronic forms, unless specified.

2. Active extra learning max. 5% [Provide evidence of your active learning of English to earn your extra points.]

3. Family trips are not considered an appropriate reason for absence.
