Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes:



By the end of the semester, students will be able to





  1. Propose and produce logically structured compositions (700 - 1000 words)




  2. Gain familiarity with various styles of composition writing




  3. Defend these compositions with pertinent examples and supporting materials




  4. Develop rhetorical writing skills and an academic-appropriate English writing style




  5. Revisions conference with the teacher both in and outside class time (additional time are available for after class times)

Summary vs Paraphrasing (How to do it; Importance and uses in essays).



In class examples to revise basics of essay writing

Definition Essay: Relevant Topics, Outlining, Grammatical Devices



Assignment Due: Summary and Paraphrasing

In class writing and improvements if time permits

Strengthening Supporting Material: Definitions, Quotes, Data and Figures; Paraphrases (APA Style);

Review of all writing forms, with a focus on synthesis writing

In class discussion of drafts and suggestions for improvements.

Presenting final Essay

  2. Writing Assignments: 70%




  3. Presentation: 12%

Evaluation Criteria:





  1. Mechanics (spelling, capitalization, punctuation)




  2. Diction (word choice, style of writing)/ Details




  3. Grammar




  4. Organization / Unity & Coherence (logic)




  5. Originality: Plagiarism, the passing of someone else’s work as your own, will be taken seriously.
