Information about the Professor:
David H. Weng (翁煌哲) is currently Assistant Professor at California State University Fullerton. Being born in and grew up in Taiwan, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas. His research and teaching areas include upper echelons, corporate strategy, and international business. His works have been published in Global Strategy Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of World Business, Leadership Quarterly, Long Range Planning, Strategic Management Journal, among others.

Information about the Talk:
Drawing on the theories of place attachment and imprinting, we propose that a CEO’s pre-career overseas exposure during the formative years, while growing up and/or studying abroad, affects the intensity of a firm’s cross-border acquisitions. Empirical analyses with a sample of U.S. publicly traded firms suggest that pre-career overseas exposure increases a CEO’s inclination to buy firms in the country where he or she lived or studied earlier in life. Further, we find that this effect is weakened by the CEO’s international work experience, the board’s cross-border acquisition experience, and the firm’s internationalization. Our findings contribute to the literature on immigrant CEOs, executives’ foreign experience, and cross-border acquisitions.
