Research has informed us about different functions and categories of text and images (e.g., Marsh & White, 2003; Unsowrth, 2006), two areas remain underexplored: the perspectives of multimodal authors (rather than researchers) and the dynamic interplay between text and images during the process of multimodal composition (not just in the final product). Hence, two important questions were raised to address the research gaps. First, what text-image relationships did the EFL multimodal authors employ to achieve the communicative purposes for their target audience? Second, what discursive practices emerged between text and images during the multimodal composing processes? In this talk, the speaker will first introduce the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies (Cope & Kalantzis, 2015), the theoretical framework that guided the present study which was conducted in a college-level multiliteracies course in Taiwan. Second, drawing on the knowledge processes proposed by Cope & Kalantzis (2015), the speaker will delineate the instructional processes to explain how learners engaged in the multimodal composing processes by experiencing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and transforming meaning. Finally, research findings will be presented in response to the two research questions. Both theoretical and practical implications will be discussed.
