ABSTRACT:
This study explores the impact of corporate green bond issuances on air quality in 28 Asian cities between 2018 and 2023, demonstrating the role of green finance in environmental improvements. It integrates comprehensive data, combining corporate green bond information with air quality metrics—PM2.5, PM10, SO4, SO2, OC, and BC. The study employs a high-dimensional fixed effects (HDFE) linear regression model with a 14-month lag to capture the long-term impacts of these bonds on pollution levels. The 14-month lag, selected based on robust empirical tests, addresses the delayed effects of environmental projects. The findings reveal significant reductions in SO4, BC, and OC concentrations, demonstrating the effectiveness of green bonds in mitigating these pollutants. However, the impact on PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 is less evident, suggesting the influence of regional and pollutant-specific factors. This analysis provides a nuanced perspective on the varying efficacy of green bonds, offering key insights for policymakers and investors. By emphasizing the importance of timing and pollutant-specific outcomes, this study contributes to a more detailed understanding of how green finance can drive air quality improvements in urban settings.
