ABSTRACT: Economic growth often leads to anti-environmental activities, contributing to carbon dioxide emissions, a serious global threat. Understanding the determinants of carbon dioxide emissions is crucial for mitigating their adverse impacts. This study investigates the multifaceted dynamics of carbon dioxide emissions, focusing on sectoral composition and the interaction of renewable energy and human capital. Utilizing the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis and Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) model, this study applies a dynamic panel data model for 118 selected countries from 2002 to 2019. This study finds that agriculture, trade openness, and industry contribute to carbon dioxide emissions, while renewable energy, human capital, and services mitigate them. Empirical findings also support the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, indicating an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease in carbon dioxide emissions as income grows. In particular, this study identifies a positive interaction effect between renewable energy and human capital, suggesting that combining efforts in these areas leads to greater reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. These findings emphasize the importance of sector-specific policies and integrated approaches that include renewable energy deployment and human capital development in addressing environmental challenges effectively.
