Teaching Methods
Teaching Assistant

There is no assigned teaching assistant for this course. There is a course assistant (CA), who is responsible for maintaining Moodle content and assignment deadlines based on the syllabus and the professor's instructions. They also assist with grading exams and some homework, as well as recording scores. 



If you are having technical difficulties with Moodle, you should email the CA. You can find their name and email on the Moodle. 


Requirement/Grading







****If you joined this class late (during drop and add) or missed the first classes, YOU are responsible for material you missed and for completing and submitting any homework due.****



Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:




  • Participation (attendance, contribution, etc.): 15%

  • Writing assignments: 20%

  • Other assignments, quizzes, etc.: 15%

  • Midterm: 20%

  • Final presentation project: 15%

  • Final written exam: 15%



Participation



Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, preparation, and contribution to the learning experience of others.




  • Attendance will be taken at most class meetings (2 points). If you are not yet present when role is called, let me know so you can be marked “late” (1 Point). If you are ill or will be absent for a good reason, let me know in advance (1 point). You may receive points for attendance if you are representing your department or NCCU in an activity or participating in another worthwhile event. Let me know if you are ill. You will not be allowed to participate in the final exam (presentation and written) if you are absent without good reason for 6 class meetings.  




  • Contribution includes your attention to what is happening in class, in-class questions, creative insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.


    • Reading materials for other classes, texting, doing non-class related work on a computer or other devise will count against your participation grade.





Homework must be done and printed, when hard copies are required, prior to the beginning of class. Moodle uploading:






    • Due Date/Time is the hour that class starts on the due date.

    • Cut-off is one hour after class on the due date. Nothing can be uploaded after this time.

    • Do not wait until the last minute to upload your work to Moodle because you may have technical problems.

    • Points may be deducted for inappropriate file names and late submission.

    • Bonus points may be added for excellent uploading and file name practices





In-class exercises/quizzes



Periodically throughout the semester, writing/listening exercises and pop quizzes will be given in class. These exercises and quizzes can NOT be made up. Quizzes are delivered online through Moodle, Kahoot! or Google Forms.



Oral presentations



Aside from informal in-class presentations, you will practice and perform public speaking in different formats.



Written assignments



In addition to the periodic in-class writing exercises, there will be three written assignments, based on the learning materials for the course. These will include a formal email, a comparison description of data and statistics, and an article summary. In each assignment, you will respond to the writing prompts provided by the teacher. Your papers should show you have completed and thought seriously and critically about the topic. Your writing must be original and written by yourself—not copied from any source. Plagiarized work will receive “0”. A writing template and an assessment rubric for each assignment are available on Moodle.



Examinations



All materials, including the readings, handouts, and information provided in class will potentially be included exams. 



The midterm consists of a written test to be completed on paper in classroom.



The final exam consists of a written test and a formal group presentation.




  • The written test includes vocabulary/grammar, and course content in multiple choice and short answer questions on cross-cultural communication content and themes covered in the semester.

  • You will perform a final presentation with two or three classmates on cross-cultural communication units 1-3; evaluation will be on group and individual basis. More details will be provided in class and in Moodle. The oral presentation will evaluate your ability to respond to the prompt appropriately and present logically organized information orally using visual aids and exhibiting strong platform skills. An assessment rubric for the writing and speaking test is available on Moodle.



No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor’s permission in advance.

No required textbook to purchase. However, you will be asked to download articles and handouts from Moodle to use in class. You may use hard copies or a tablet to complete them.
