English Lecture 本演講以英文進行

Over the past 15 years, the study of digital politics has grown rapidly. Every year, more students and scholars take an interest in the politicisation of the digital sphere and the digitisation of the political field. In my own work, I have distinguished four interlinked domains of digital (aka ‘nerd’) politics, namely digital rights, data activism, social protest, and formal politics (Postill 2018), and advocated an ethnographic approach to their study (Postill in press). The current boom in the use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) tools raises intriguing questions about their political and policy-making implications (Dippel and Sudmann 2023). This boom also poses major challenges for ethnographers of digital politics. In this talk I discuss some of these questions and challenges, including debates about data activism (Milan 2022), automated decision-making in the public sector (Carlsson et al 2023), predictive policing (Marda and Narayan 2021), AI as a ‘black box’ (Christin 2020), and ChatGPT as a ‘bullshit genre’ app (Gershon 2023). As this will be an exploratory, open-ended session, participants are expected to come to the lecture being prepared to reflect on their own AI experiences and readings about this topic.
